The first electric racing team of the University of Twente, Electric Superbike Twente, presented the brand new electric super bike on May 25: the Liion GP. This electric motorcycle is completely designed and produced by the students team. With the Liion GP they want to show how fast electrical transport can go. Count me in guys, I want to go to work with these bike 🙂
At the presentation in Twente, a film was shown of the entire design and construction process. The fifteen students have made these designs in just nine months, tested parts and built a complete motorcycle. The coming weeks there will be extensive testing in the run up to the races in the MotoE competition in England and the Netherlands.
A technical highlight is the integrated design of the electric motor in the frame. By placing the electric motor in the frame, the frame became stiffer. This also ensures space saving, allowing more battery capacity to be added. “A nice fact is that our electric motor is designed in such a way that he has to be able to keep a 600cc motorcycle at Assen!”, Says Powertrain manager Jeroen Goudswaard.
In addition to all in-house developments on the technical side, such as frame, battery pack and electronics, the fairing is also entirely developed at the university. Bram Norp, responsible for the design: “We considered the required air cooling and the ergonomics. Moreover, we wanted to present a motorcycle that looks great with great riding performance. I think we have put down a great design.”

Team manager Tim Veldhuis is pretty enthusiastic: “It’s great to see how the team has gotten so far in such a short time! It is incredibly cool to show the world what is possible with the current technology. We are proud of the design, and if we race in the summer, it’s going to be a reward for our work. The first race is in Pembrey in the United Kingdom on July 8th. We will race at 250 km/h on the racetrack.”
