CAKE, the Swedish manufacturer of lightweight electric off-road performance motorcycles, announced the successful debut of the first International CAKE One Design Race in Saint Tropez, France. Racing took place September 5-6, 2020 and was hosted by ElektraFuture, founded by Olivier Le Quellec and Vincent Prat.
After time qualifying races on Saturday with a podium of three finalists per series, Sunday’s racing kicked off with a direct elimination one-to-one races, resulting in a podium of three for the super final.
This year’s International CAKE One Design Race Champion of the Universe was Mickael Maschio, a 2x motocross World Champion. Other racers in this year’s event included: Fabien Barel, 3x downhill mountain biking world champion; Fabrice Guyot, vice champion Italy motocross and 7th in world supermoto; Cedric Soubeyras, multiple European motocross and supercross champion; Marceau Paillasson, enduro champion of France; Pierre Pallut, extreme enduro champion; and Antoine Meo, 5x Enduro world champion and many more amazing riders.
“The format of clean and silent electric city racing that combines responsibility with excitement is a core part of the CAKE we are baking,” remarked CAKE founder and CEO, Stefan Ytterborn. “The revival of motorcycle racing that is inclusive and doesn’t disturb or pollute is a dream come true for us. Thanks to our amazing partner and taking the initiative to do this!”
Thanks to the CAKE Kalk’s quick acceleration and low weight, the track did not require long stretches and measured out at a compact 60 x 60 meters. It took just one day to complete and served as a demonstration of just how easy it is to put on this style of race format.
Much like the FIA Formula E World Championships, the organizers of the first Saint-Tropez event see the International CAKE One Design Race series occurring in cities throughout the globe. CAKE will look to establish FIM approval for the race series and hope to inspire a spectator-friendly future for electric-powered off-road racing.
The concept
Just like the FIA Formula E World Championships, the electric equivalent of Formula 1 imagined in 2014 over 11 events in the heart of the World’s largest cities, we wanted to offer Saint Tropez the launch of a World premier, designed by Vincent Prat and Olivier Le Quellec : a MotoCross race and a ZERO EMISSION exhibition in the centre of a town.
32 pilots selected for the races divided into two series of 16. Direct elimination in one to one races, a podium of 3 finalists per series, a podium of 3 for the super final.
The electric fairy at the service of a traditionally extreme sport associated with noise, fumes and smells. Who would have imagined, only 5 years ago, that we would be offering in the heart of cities the possibility of practising in silence and with zero pollution one of the most spectacular, and popular mechanical sports in the World : MotoCross racing !
La place des Lices
By choosing to install an ephemeral MotoCross track on the Place des Lices we are offering a great showcase to electric technology associated with extreme sports and de facto to the Sponsors of the ELEKTRA FUTURE event in Saint- Tropez.
