Karmic has spent the last few years engineering a new kind of electric bike. Building from scratch and with a fresh open mind, they bring you something you’ve never seen before. Presenting the OSLO.
Hong Quan (CEO): The Karmic team is a team of builders, makers, dreamers, fathers, a mother, neighbours… regular people similar like you! It’s important to us to put as much good into the world as we can. We love empowering people through our work, and we’ve come a long way to bring the OSLO to you! It’s not about where you are on your journey, it’s about the distance you’ve traveled to get there.
At Karmic, they believe that mobility is an opportunity and unlocks the potential in everyone. That’s why it was so important for the team to build something that could serve the future. They wanted to build a forward-thinking bike with sustainability at its core. Karmic wanted to get even more people on electric bikes. People who might not have ridden a bike in many years, or maybe people who never thought they were cyclists.
Karmic has put a lot of time and thought into the needs of today’s urban rider. While any bike can be used to navigate your city, the OSLO is the first of its kind. A modern City Cycle designed from the ground up to be safe, comfortable, and efficient. Karmic believes it is the best way to get around – better than a car, rideshare, or even regular bikes and electric scooters. Based on years of feedback from their Karmic Owners and their own research into why people were not riding bikes, the team has created something completely new to get more people out of their cars and on to the future of personal electric mobility.
Lien Johnson (Creative Director): “We’re inspired by Legendary Designers across all industries and time. From Charles and Ray Eames’ philosophy to “make the best, for the most, for the least,” to Dieter Rams’ “10 Principles of Good Design.” Less, but Better. We believe the OSLO will change the world. While not everyone will agree, those who believe in Karmic will. We know our bikes change our Owner’s worlds. Now you can get the “Karmic Experience” for yourself.”
The OSLO is a Class 2 Ebike. That means it has an electronically limited top-speed of 20mph. Of course you can go faster on while riding down hills, but the motor will only assist up to 20 mph. Karmic also designed the standard battery pack to give up to 20 miles of real world range. The OSLO has 3 levels of pedal assist (Eco, Normal, Boost) as well as a throttle whenever you need it. Range estimate assumes rider is using the throttle more often than not. Of course they could make claims of greater range, but that isn’t how they operate. The throttle is great for getting quickly off the line, and staying ahead of other traffic.
The OSLO has a hydroformed aluminum chassis with thermoplastic bodywork (similar to a car bumper), its alloy wheels stay true over bumps and potholes, and its wider pneumatic tires give a confident yet comfortable ride and handling. OSLO uses hydraulic disc brakes in the front and back, just like a modern automobile for maximum safety and years of reliable service. Karmic: “If we want people to trade in their cars for something better, it has to be truly better. The OSLO’s integrated headlights never need charging and are always on (DRLs), and its wraparound tail light not only increases rider visibility, but they activate when you’re stopping to give drivers maximum time to respond.”
The team completely redesigned the Karmic Battery and made it even easier to use. You just lift up the saddle, pull the old one out to charge and drop the fully charged one in! Ready to roll in under 30 seconds! The new 48-volt architecture has many advantages, such as higher torque, greater efficiency and faster charging times. The OSLO is also the first e-bike that uses the new 21700 cell size (commonly referred to as the Tesla Cell, although it was co-developed with Panasonic). Originally these cells were only used in the Tesla Model 3. Karmic thinks this will be the new industry standard across all light electric vehicles (LEVs) in a few years time. They have been field-testing the new Karmic Battery for over 2 years, but were waiting until Panasonic made them available for production (to companies other than Tesla) before spec’ing them in the OSLO.
