NIU’s RQi made its first appearance at CES 2020, where the company showcased two new light electric vehicles. After a few years of anticipation, the RQi has finally arrived at dealerships. THE PACK was invited to test drive this modern commuter solution in its natural environment: the city streets. We received an invitation from the NIU Flagship store in Antwerp and eagerly accepted the opportunity.
First impressions: a true motorcycle experience
And it really is a genuine motorcycle: Guy Salens – THE PACK: “What strikes me immediately is that this bike is much larger and more robust than what we’ve seen in previously published photos. I am also surprised to see that NIU has chosen a chain drive instead of their usual hub motor system on their scooters. This could potentially result in some mechanical noise, but my ride was surprisingly quiet and smooth without any metallic sounds”.
Riding the RQi
The urban roadster flaunts an iconic round halo light design and high-quality components, including Brembo brakes and Pirelli tires. Advanced electronic features such as ABS, TCS, cruise control, and front and rear cameras demonstrate NIU’s attention to technology and detail.
Upon my first encounter, I was bothered by the protruding parts on both sides of the saddle – a design feature that I eventually grew accustomed to. However, these “wings” would rub against the insides of my thighs uncomfortably. The reason for this wide design is to accommodate two large batteries, which are anything but small. In fact, unlocking and removing them is quite a challenge.
The RQi boasts a pair of detachable 72V 36Ah lithium-ion batteries, each weighing 22.5 kg. These batteries can be charged using the external charger provided at any standard power outlet. After fully charging my motorcycle, I rode through about 10 km of city traffic in Dynamic mode. When I returned, the battery level was still at 88%. This makes it a perfect choice for urban commuting as it can cover approximately 80 to 90 km on secondary roads before needing to be recharged.
Included with this electric motorcycle is the newest 1000-watt fast charging system. It can fully charge a single battery in just 4 hours, or both batteries in 7 hours. The charger can be connected to the scooter itself or directly to the detachable batteries for convenience.
The bike can be activated either through the NIU app or with the key conveniently kept in your pocket. Simply press the start button (located under a cover for protection) and then use the brake lever and green button on the handlebar to activate the system. There are three modes to choose from: E-save, Dynamic, and Sport. As expected, Eco mode is the most efficient option but not the most exciting. With Bluetooth capability, the RQi can detect when you are approaching or walking away.
With its wide straight handlebar and well-positioned footrests, this motorcycle provides an optimal upright seating position that enhances maneuverability. It remains balanced and smooth to steer, even at low speeds in the city where it can easily weave between cars. The single rear shock, which can be adjusted, and the upside-down front fork contribute to keeping the bike stable at all times. Parking is a breeze with the slow forward and reverse riding modes, and the self-canceling turn signals are always a welcome feature. However, wider mirrors would be a welcome addition, though.
The two Brembo brakes can be adjusted using levers on the handlebar, a deliberate decision by NIU to cater to scooter riders who are used to this setup. The RQi is a perfect choice for those looking for an upgraded riding experience.
The RQi is equipped with a centrally located electric motor that utilizes a chain drive to produce 5 kW (with a peak of 7.5 kW) and 450 Nm of torque. During my ride through the city in Dynamic mode, I found the acceleration to be smooth and quick, easily reaching speeds of 50 or 70 km/h (depending on the road conditions, of course). For those who crave even more speed, there is a boost mode available. However, certain conditions must be met: Sport mode must be activated and the battery level must not be below 50%. And even then, you still need to push a button and squeeze a brake lever… shouldn’t it be easier? According to NIU, the maximum speed for the RQi is 110 km/h.
New smart features
- ABS (Anti-Lock Braking System)
- TCS (Traction Control System)
- BMS (Battery Management System)
- Forward & Reverse Assist
- Dual drive recording cameras with cloud upload
- Fixed speed cruise control
- GPS positioning + navigation
- 6 Start Modes

Front & rear camera
With just one click, the front and rear cameras on the RQi can start recording your drive instantly. In case of an emergency, an impact detection system will automatically save one minute of footage before and after the collision to the cloud. Every time you turn on the RQi, its cameras will begin recording right away. If something happens during your ride, the minute leading up to it and following it will be safely saved on the onboard memory card and easily accessible through the dedicated app.
NIU Smart app
The NIU Smart app features will be available for 3 years after purchasing the vehicle. After that, a subscription can be purchased directly through the NIU app (although the vehicle can still be used without the subscription).
Forward & Reverse Assist
The “Assisted/Walking” mode, activated by the cruise control button, allows easy maneuvering at low speeds—ideal for tight parking situations.

Conclusion
Guy Salens – THE PACK: “In the 11 kW category, which is comparable to a traditional 125 cc motorcycle, the RQi from NIU emerges as a strong contender. Though designed with the commuter rider in mind, it also has the potential to appeal to leisure riders seeking a reliable and efficient solution. Surprisingly, despite its chain drive, the RQi emits minimal noise, allowing for a peaceful and enjoyable riding experience. The bike felt comfortable and lively from the moment I got on. On top of that, it comes with an extended variety of standard technologic features, but what really stands out is its price: in the Benelux region, it costs only €7998 – making it highly likely that we’ll be seeing an increasing number of RQis cruising down roads across Europe and the rest of the world in the near future”.
