New attempt for a Guinness World Record
Ali Abdo: “As a pre-event for my ride to COP29, I aim to break the Guinness World Record by covering the greatest distance on an electric scooter within 24 hours in the UAE. This effort is designed to promote sustainable transportation and mobilize support for climate action in the Middle East and Africa. During my journey to Baku, I also plan to set the record for the most countries visited in a continuous journey by an electric motorcycle.”
What is COP29?
The Conference of the Parties (COP), is held annually, with the Presidency rotating between the five recognised UN regions. This year, Azerbaijan has been selected as the Presidency of the 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29), to be hosted in Baku this November. Azerbaijan has a strong track record of hosting international events and has chosen Baku Stadium as the venue for COP29. There are now 198 Parties (197 countries plus the European Union) to the Convention, constituting near universal membership.
The Ride to 2030
The Ride to 2030 initiative takes a unique approach to addressing the pressing issue of climate change and its impact on the 2030 Agenda and Sustainable Development. By utilizing electric motorcycles, this groundbreaking initiative travels to various destinations, engaging with young individuals along the way. The main objective is to increase awareness and promote sustainable practices by highlighting success stories, challenges, and opportunities in the fight against climate change. Through education and raising awareness, The Ride to 2030 aims to inspire a more sustainable future and motivate others to take action towards a greener world.
A critical moment in global transformative climate action
For over 30 years, the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) has gathered member countries annually to discuss climate measures and determine each country’s ambition and responsibilities. In 2015, during the 21st session (COP21), the Paris Agreement was reached. This agreement called for collaboration and action from all nations to limit global temperature increase to 1.5C above pre-industrial levels by 2100 and adapt to the current effects of climate change.
UAE as hosts
Since it was first established in 1971, the UAE has been a strong advocate for addressing climate change on a global scale. Located in an area known for extreme heat and limited water resources, the country has recognized climate change as a pressing issue that must be tackled. As a leader in the fields of energy and sustainability in its region, the UAE has experienced economic growth and diversification while also generating opportunities for its youth and offering practical solutions to a worldwide issue that impacts us all.
