Source: website the Port of Antwerp Night Marathon | It’s finally happening: the start of the long-awaited first physical edition of the Port of Antwerp Night Marathon. One year later than hoped (damn you, Covid-19!). 11th September 2021: 101 years to this day after closing the Olympic Summer Games in Antwerp, the City of Antwerp is hosting a new top sporting event.
When day becomes night. Thousands of participants will run into the night on Saturday 11th September. What is more, the harbour lights, cafes and beer gardens, and rock bands and DJs (stationed at every km!) add to the unique atmosphere. The programme features a marathon, half marathon and marathon relay for teams of four.

At this first edition of the Port of Antwerp Night Marathon, a team of riders with electric scooters will accompany the participants. Photographers, event officials, reporters etc will be riding along with experienced riders through the streets of Antwerp. These light electric vehicles are silent, have no noise pollution and can be really fast (if necessary) and are very manoeuvrable in an urban environment.
Road captain will be Pat Kramp from NIU Flagshipstore Antwerpen. It’s not the first time that Pat is involved in these kind of event escorts. Using electric vehicles in sports events is not yet well established but is very well received by the participants because of its environmentally friendly character.
Pat: “These NIU scooters are perfect for the job. They are silent, clean and have of course enough range for the 42 km marathon contest. In earlier contests I always got a lot of positive comments when I passed the runners. Sometimes they had even time for a little chat.”
